UNDERSTANDING SARCOMA

If you or your loved one has been diagnosed with a sarcoma such as bone cancer or soft tissue cancer – Peter Mac is here to help.

The cause of these cancers is unclear. Bone cancer can grow in any bone of the body but most do not start in the bone, they spread from other body parts such as the lung or breast. These are known as metastatic bone cancers.

Soft tissue cancers, like bone cancer, can also start in any part of the body. This cancer grows in fat, muscle, nerves, blood vessels and other soft tissues that cover or surround bone joints.

FOCUSING ON YOU

Placing you at the centre of our work, your specialist will determine where your cancer started (what type of cell) and what type of cancer it is.

Bone and soft tissue cancers are different from each other and each one has different, related diseases and treatments.

Bone cancer can be either:

  • Primary bone cancer is rare and there are more than 30 different types of this cancer disease.
  • Secondary bone cancer is more common. This cancer is metastatic, which means it started in another place of the body and has travelled to the bone(s).

Soft tissue cancer, which is rare, has about 50 different types of related cancer diseases.
