Children’s cancers are often very different from adult cancers and respond differently to treatment.
The Peter Mac Children’s Clinic is the provider of radiotherapy for children under 16 years old in Victoria, Southern New South Wales and Tasmania. We also treat a number of 16–18 year olds, as well as some young adults who have paediatric-type malignancies.
There are two radiation oncologists attached to the service, Dr Greg Wheeler and Dr Mary Dwyer. Both are active members of the RANZCR Paediatric Special Interest Group, Children’s Oncology Group and the Paediatric Radiation Oncology Society.
Like all Peter Mac’s tumour streams, the Paediatric Service is a collaboration with clinical partners, providing coordinated and comprehensive cancer care. Ours is the largest paediatric radiation oncology clinic in Australia, treating about 100 children a year. We liaise with the OnTrac at Peter Mac adolescent and young adult service, the Royal Children’s Hospital and Monash Children’s Hospital.
We have a strong music therapy program, a radiotherapist-driven video-making program and are supported by philanthropic groups such as Koala Kids and the RCD Foundation.
